Omega participant Joanne has been part of the Omega community since 2019, and in that time, she has brought endless laughter, kindness, and creativity to those around her.
Known for her caring nature and wicked sense of humour, Joanne always knows how to make people smile. Joanne’s vibrant personality shines through in everything she does.
We asked Joanne a few questions so everyone could have the opportunity to get to know the amazing woman she is.
What hobbies or activities make you happiest?
I love playing netball and spending time with my cat, Misty. She makes me so happy, and I love her very much. I also really enjoy spending time with my boyfriend. On Saturday nights, we often go to the disco together, which is always lots of fun.
We are always joking around and laughing. One time, my boyfriend was headbanging to the music and later complained that he had a sore head. I laughed and said, “What do you expect when you dance like that?” Another time, he was singing along to the songs but got all the words completely wrong, which made us both laugh.
I also enjoy spending time in the city and listening to music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. My favourite artist is John Farnham. I went to his concert in March and even met his wife, she was really lovely.
What’s something people are always surprised to learn about you?
People are often surprised to learn that I am very creative. I love arts and crafts and enjoy making cup coasters and jewellery. I also know how to sew and can make clothes.
Another exciting thing about me is that I am about to celebrate my 50th birthday. I am planning a party at a local hotel to celebrate with family and friends.
I also recently reconnected with my birth parents, which has been very special.
What’s your favourite activity to do with your team?
I enjoy going out with my team to see new places and try new things. One of my favourite places to visit is Barkly Square Shopping Centre.
Most of all, my staff make me really happy. I enjoy spending time with them, and we always have fun together.
Do you have any funny stories you can share about your staff?
I love playing practical jokes on my staff and having a laugh with them. Sometimes I can be a bit cheeky and call them “old bags,” which always makes everyone laugh.
My staff are always having fun with me, joking around, and making me smile. We have a great time and enjoy making each other laugh every day.
What goal are you currently working toward?
My staff have been helping me find a day program. We spent time looking at different options to make sure it was the best fit.
I am starting the program this week, and I am really excited to try something new, meet new people, and try new things.
What’s something you’re really proud of?
I am proud of having a lovely home that I take good care of. I am also very proud of being a responsible cat owner and giving Misty the best life possible.
I am someone who always stands up for what is right, and I enjoy helping and looking out for other people when they need support.
We are very lucky to have Joanne as part of our Omega community. We look forward to seeing all that she continues to achieve, and having many more laughs with her.
