Meet Nicki: Building Relationships, Supporting Goals and Celebrating Every Win

Nicki has been part of the Omega team since 2023. During this time, she has built strong relationships with the people she supports and continues to achieve great outcomes by helping participants work towards their individual goals.

We asked Nicki a few questions about her experience working in disability support, what she enjoys about her role and the lessons she has learned along the way.

What made you choose a career in disability support?

To be honest, I hadn’t considered a career in disability support until a friend suggested that they thought it would suit me. After thinking about it, I had an interview with Omega Support Group and was successful in gaining a casual role.

After working in the role for a few months, I realised this was the right job for me. I had originally enrolled to study a Diploma in Community Services the following year, but I decided to change my plans and study a Certificate III in Individual Support – Disability/Aged Care.

Having now worked in disability support for more than three years, one of the things I love most is the relationships I get to build. I love getting to know people for who they are, what makes them happy, supporting their goals and celebrating the little wins with them.

If you could describe your role in three words, what would they be?

Important. Fulfilling. Enjoyable.

What has been your proudest moment as a support worker?

One of my proudest moments was supporting a young man to overcome his fear of escalators.

For months, we would head to the shopping centre together to work on tackling his fear. He never gave up, even though he felt that he would never overcome it.

With patience, gentle encouragement and active support, I was able to share the moment with him when he finally went up the escalator.

It was such a proud moment and one I will never forget.

What’s something that always makes you smile at work?

Seeing the people I support happy, confident and proud of themselves.

Sharing these moments with them makes me smile. I also love knowing that my support has made someone’s day a little easier.

What’s one lesson you’ve learned from your participants that you carry into everyday life?

One lesson I’ve learned is that everyone has different abilities, needs, ways of doing things and communication styles.

Someone may take a little longer to complete a task or communicate what they need, but giving them time and respecting their independence can make a big difference.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting out as a support worker, what would it be?

Take the time to understand the participant’s individual needs, preferences and goals.

Don’t assume you know what is best for someone. Listen to them without judgement and support their choices.

What do you enjoy most about working at Omega Support?

For me, it’s the people. Building genuine relationships, getting to know participants and supporting them to achieve their goals makes the work incredibly rewarding.

Every person is different, and every achievement — whether it’s a big milestone or a small win — is worth celebrating.

We are incredibly grateful to have Nicki as part of the Omega Support team. We appreciate the dedication, compassion and commitment she brings to her role each day, and the positive difference she makes in the lives of the people she supports.
